Here is my curated 1-day itinerary to help you make the most of this stunning historic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\uddfa\ufe0f Morning: The Historic Center &amp; The Age of Discovery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lagos played a massive role in the Portuguese Age of Discovery, and its old town\u2014hugged by ancient Moorish walls\u2014is filled with stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Walk the Ancient City Walls:<\/strong> Start your morning with a stroll along the well-preserved stone walls and check out the facade of the <strong>Governors&#8217; Castle<\/strong> (<em>Castelo dos Governadores<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pra\u00e7a Infante Dom Henrique:<\/strong> This is the historic heart of the town. Here you&#8217;ll find the <strong>Church of Santa Maria<\/strong> and the old <strong>Slave Market<\/strong> (<em>Mercado de Escravos<\/em>), which was the first in Europe and now serves as a deeply moving museum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Golden Church (Igreja de Santo Ant\u00f3nio):<\/strong> Don\u2019t let the simple exterior fool you. Inside, it holds one of the most breathtaking and intricate displays of baroque gilded wood (<em>talha dourada<\/em>) in all of Portugal. It is a must-see!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get Lost in the Pedestrian Streets:<\/strong> Spend the rest of your morning wandering the traditional cobblestone streets, packed with local boutiques, cozy cafes, and vibrant street art.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf7d\ufe0f Lunch: Fresh Catch &amp; Sea Flavors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For lunch, your best bet in Lagos is either grilled fish right off the boats or traditional seafood petiscos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Where to go:<\/strong> You can choose a hidden tavern in the old town or cross the footbridge to the modern <strong>Lagos Marina<\/strong>. Enjoying an <em>Arroz de Marisco<\/em> (seafood rice) or a perfectly grilled sea bream while watching the yachts sail by is pure bliss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcf8 Afternoon: Ponta da Piedade &amp; Postcard-Perfect Beaches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The afternoon is dedicated to the reason Lagos is world-famous: its dramatic, sea-sculpted golden coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ponta da Piedade:<\/strong> This is the crown jewel of Lagos\u2014a headland surrounded by towering yellow limestone cliffs, sea arches, and hidden caves.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>How to explore:<\/em> You can walk along the wooden boardwalks on top of the cliffs for jaw-dropping views, or descend the long stone staircase to the water. My favorite option? Hop on a small, traditional fisherman&#8217;s boat right there to tour the grottos from inside the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Praia do Camilo:<\/strong> On your way back from Ponta da Piedade, stop at this iconic beach. Access is via a wooden staircase of over 200 steps, but the view from the top and the crystal-clear, emerald water make every single step worth it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Praia da Dona Ana:<\/strong> If you prefer a beach with a bit more sand to lay down your towel and take a late afternoon dip, this is the ideal choice. It has been named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world multiple times!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have a wonderful day exploring Lagos! If you need help arranging a grotto boat tour ahead of time, just drop me a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>Gabi&#8217;s Tip:<\/strong> Parking in the center of Lagos can be tricky during the summer. I always recommend that our guests leave their car at the large, free parking lot near the <strong>Lagos Marina<\/strong> and simply walk across the pedestrian drawbridge into the historic center.
