Romantic getaway

3 days

If you’re in search of the perfect place for a getaway with your other half, the Algarve is, without a doubt, the right choice for surprising that special someone and celebrating your love, at any time of the year.

By the sea or in the rural surroundings of the Algarve hills, in a natural environment or in a town steeped in history, you will always find the best romantic setting in the Algarve.

We suggest you enjoy three days at the eastern end, between Tavira, Cacela Velha and Castro Marim with one of our relaxing, romantic itineraries.

Visit historical areas such as Castro Marim and its castle, the hamlet of Cacela Velha overlooking the Formosa River, Tavira and its numerous churches, its castle and museum. In Tavira, sample the region’s cuisine by visiting the Riverside Market, for example.

Walk along or relax on the vast sandy beach of Fábrica, next to Cacela Velha, and enjoy a trip on the Formosa River in a typical fisherman’s boat.

Choose from one of the many accommodation options available in the Algarve, unwind at a spa and enjoy the sun setting over the sea as you make a toast to love.

On this or any other itinerary that you may choose, you will have many gorgeous settings for that must-take selfie to keep your happy memories alive forever.

Swimming in the Algarve

4 days

Extensive sandy beaches or small coves, undulating dunes or high cliffs, rocks, caves, the smell of the sea, the many shades of blue and green of the sea, marine biodiversity, the sun and countless beach activities come together to make the Algarve the best European beach destination.

Two hundred kilometres of safe beaches await you, with excellent services and access.

One of the municipalities in the Algarve with the largest number of beaches is Albufeira. Among the more than two dozen beaches with different configurations and different natural settings, where you can go swimming, we leave you with some suggestions.

Lose yourself in the sand of Salgados beach and in the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape with its imposing dunes, the lagoon’s water mirror and its dense vegetation that is home to a diverse birdlife. Take advantage of the extensive walkways to stroll and observe the surrounding nature.

Heading east, look for Evaristo Beach, a small cove between low cliffs and rock formations. Put on your diving goggles and fins and set off to discover the marine life that thrives near the rocks.

Walk just over 10 km to the east, among pine forests you will find Praia de Santa Eulália. With a wide sandy beach and small rocky corners, it is a peaceful beach of great beauty and with various support equipment.

Finally, it is mandatory to try Falésia beach. Flanked by a line of high cliffs in contrasting colours, it offers an extensive beach and is considered one of the most beautiful in this region.

Family Algarve

3 days

“The Algarve is an ideal destination for family holidays, not only for its long sandy beaches and calm waters but for the many activities that can be carried out in the region. Here it is easy to please kids and adults alike, both in summer and at other times of the year. The possible combinations are many. Follow our proposals or build one to suit you.

In Lagos, visit the Centro de Ciência Viva and its exhibitions. It is a space for scientific and technological dissemination with diverse activity proposals that will please the whole family. Also visit the city, which is closely linked to the history of Portuguese expansion throughout the world. Among the various points of interest, you will find the Slavery Route Museum Center, the Boas Esperança Caravela, usually anchored in the Lagos marina and the Discoveries Wax Museum, which allows you to revisit history in a didactic and fun way.

On Salema beach, Vila do Bispo, observe the footprints of bipedal carnivorous dinosaurs that populated this region 140 million years ago and are visible on the rocks located to the east. Back in Lagos, head to the Zoological Park, an educational and conservation space that has support equipment such as playgrounds and a snack bar and also presents various educational activities. There you can see chimpanzees, bobcats, meerkats, scarlet ibis and black-necked swans, to name just a few of the animals that live there, among the various species of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish.

In Portimão, travel back in time at the city’s museum, located in an old fish canning factory, on the riverfront. It is one of the most awarded museums both nationally and internationally, which gives you an insight into the history of local communities, Portimão’s canning industrial past and the seabed, with underwater images of the Arade River and the coastline. Then, head inland to the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve for a challenging driving experience and perhaps a race between family members. There are programs aimed at adults and children with guaranteed fun.”

Navigate the Algarve coast

With around 200 kilometres of coastline, an excellent climate and calm waters, the Algarve is great for sailing, even if you don’t own a boat, as there is always the chance to rent one or join cruises that showcase the beauty of the Algarvian coast.

Getting to know the region from the sea is a completely different experience which surprises us every moment. From the golden rocks in which erosion has carved caves and exuberant shapes, especially between Lagos and Albufeira, to the reddish cliffs and white dunes that frame wide sands, the variety of the landscape is great. The rough sea to the west, near Sagres, warms and calms as we head east, making this adventure more relaxing.

There are also navigable rivers, such as the Arade, which between Portimão and Silves has corners of great beauty, with crystal-clear water sources, immense vegetation and memories of the Arab presence. In the far east, the climb up the Guadiana is a pleasant walk between vast banks, where we can see mills, typical houses and pasture fields. And in between the Ria Formosa, a protected area of salt marshes, dunes and almost deserted islands with seemingly endless sands bathed by transparent waters.

We can discover this diversity on board small licensed boats or on tours organized by different companies. Many of them include lunch on board or a typical Portuguese sardine in a secluded bay. There are also tours with an ecotourism aspect to observe the fauna and flora in the Ria Formosa Natural Park and in the Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Natural Reserve.

But for those who are qualified, there is nothing better than sailing at the helm of a boat and discovering hidden coves between dunes and cliffs, deserted and wild beaches inaccessible by land. Diving in these places under the hot Algarve summer sun makes us feel like we are in paradise. And you don’t even need to have a boat, as several companies rent them for a few hours or days. Those who enjoy fishing, testing their adrenaline by trying to capture large species, will find the Algarve a good destination for coarse fishing, especially in the more western waters.

With good sea and winds, there are excellent conditions here for sailing events that attract participants from different parts of the world. As a setting or stopover point, the Algarve is a constant presence on the calendars of the most prestigious international events in the sport. Sailing is within everyone’s reach, as there are many schools and nautical clubs in most cities and towns on the coast where it is possible to learn. It’s another way to discover the Algarve, just plot a route, set sail, release moorings and set off on the adventure!
