Hi everyone, Gabi here! đž
One of the things our guests tell me they love most about our villas is the freedom. The freedom to wake up late, have breakfast in your pajamas, and, of course, fire up the BBQ in the late afternoon while the kids take their last dips in the pool.
Cooking on holiday shouldn’t feel like a chore; it can be a delightful experience if you use the right ingredients! Today, Iâm sharing my favorite spots to shop around Guia and Albufeira, so you can stock up your villa like a true local.
đ The Freshest Fish: Where to go?
If you want to make a memorable grilled fish on the villaâs BBQ, fresh fish from our coast is a must. Here are the two best options in the area:
- Albufeira Municipal Market (Caliços): The most famous one. Open early in the morning (Tuesday to Sunday). Look out for local sea bass (robalo), sea bream (dourada), or local squid. The vendors will clean the fish for you on the spot!
- Olhos d’Ăgua Municipal Market: Smaller and cozier, but with an absolutely incredible fresh fish stall. Ideal if you want to avoid the crowds of the larger markets.

đ Fruit & Veggies Packed with “Sun Flavor”
Guia and the Albufeira region are surrounded by small local producers. Forget the tasteless vegetables from massive chain supermarkets.
- Guia Local Market (Fridays and Saturdays): My best-kept secret! Itâs a tiny market right here in Guia where local farmers bring whatever they harvested the day before.
- Roadside Stalls in Guia: Along the main road, youâll spot small vans and wooden stalls. Stop there to pick up some local tomatoes (perfect for an Algarve salad with oregano), sweet Algarve oranges, and fresh figs.
đ„© For Meat Lovers and the Ultimate BBQ Night
Outdoor dining is the official plan for summer nights. If you want top-quality meat for your grill, you need to know these spots:
- Caliços Market Butchers: Features several traditional butcher shops with excellent regional meats.
- Apocalipse Supermarket (Guia): A very complete supermarket right here in our village of Guia, with a fantastic butcher counter where you can find skewers, local pork cuts (porco preto), and pre-marinated meats ready for the grill.
- Algarve Shopping (Guia): The massive Continente hypermarket has everything you need for large grocery hauls, including bags of charcoal and firelighters.
đ· To Toast: Our Region’s Wine
No BBQ is complete without a great glass of wine. Did you know that Guia has a rich winemaking tradition?
- My recommendation: Try the wines from Adega do Cantor (The Winery of the Singer), located right here in Guia. A crisp white or a light rosé pairs beautifully with a lazy afternoon by the pool.
Gabiâs Tip: When you arrive, your kitchen is already equipped with the essentials to get you started. If you need exact directions to any of these markets, just drop me a message!
Set the terrace table, open a bottle of wine, and enjoy the true taste of the Algarve.
Best,
Gabi
